The small village of Leipoldtville north-east of Elands Bay on the road to Graafwater, was established in 1905 when the Reverend C.J. Leipoldt of Clanwilliam started a congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church to serve the farming community in the area.
Reverend Leipoldt used to sleep in a room at the Country Retreat when he came to Leipoldtville for Communion, and he was the father of the well known C Louis Leipoldt, physician, poet and author.
Facilities Available
Leipoldtville occupies part of the farm 'Modderfontein,' and it is here that the Leipoldt Country Retreat is located. The core of the retreat is the old homestead dating from 1800, which because of its age, is considered a Heritage Site.
The family currently occupies the homestead however the beautiful architecture can be viewed by arrangement.
The homestead can be seen above One of the guest units is part of the house, with a separate entrance while the other unit is separate from the house and has a fireplace for those cold winter evenings. A cosy bar and restaurant provide a relaxed atmosphere for the weary traveler returning from a full day of sightseeing. The separate guest units is shown above The comfortable bedroom of the separate guest unit shown above, can be seen in the photograph to the right. A view through the door of the restaurant looking at the separate unit illustrated above, is shown on the left. The photograph on the right shows a view of the Warthog Pub and Restaurant
